We move to St Ives Plaza on 19 October. Where to go until then

Preventative Care Programme

Heart health check

Know your numbers, and what to do about them.

A 45 minute check with your GP that estimates your risk of heart attack or stroke over the next five years, and what would lower it.

Who it may suit

This may be appropriate if

  • You are 45 or older, or 30 or older if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • You have not been diagnosed with heart disease
  • You have a family history, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes and would like to know where you stand

Not sure? Book a standard appointment and your GP will advise.

To read at home: Understanding Your Heart Risk Score and Understanding High Blood Pressure. More in the resource library.

What to expect
  1. Before you come

A blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar, which can be collected next door on a day that suits you.

  2. With your GP

Blood pressure, family history, smoking, activity and weight, brought together into a single risk estimate.

  3. If more is needed

Your GP explains any further tests that may be appropriate, and arranges them with you.

  4. Afterwards

A plain-language plan, and we may contact you when your next check could be due.

Your questions answered

A few of the things people often wonder about before booking. If there's something else on your mind, just ask, we're always happy to talk it through.

How often should I have one?

For most people, every two years if your risk is low, and more often if it is higher. Your GP will tell you which applies.

Do I need to fast?

Usually not. Your GP will let you know if a fasting test is preferred for you.

Is there a Medicare rebate?

A Medicare rebate applies, and the check may be bulk billed during one of our preventative care campaigns. We will let you know when one is running. Current fees are on the fees page.

What if I already have a heart condition?

Then you need ongoing care rather than a screening check. Book a standard appointment and ask about a chronic condition management plan.

Part of the Preventative Care Programme

The Preventative Care Coordinator may contact you when this, or another check, could be due.
